Buried within a gem of a book lies a letter full of profound spiritual truths—advice from an old and wise man to a young man just starting out in life. Now, you may think I’m talking about one of Paul’s letters to Timothy, but I actually want to tell you about a little volume called the Story of Charles Ogilvie.
Charles is a recently orphaned lad who must live with his uncle after his mother’s death. He walks over one hundred and forty miles to reach his uncle’s home. On his journey, Charles meets a wise man who later sends him a letter containing this advice.
“Do not loiter on the heavenly road; but persevere in it, as you persevered in that long walk of a hundred and forty miles . . . do not be satisfied with being almost persuaded to be a Christian, but daily seek God’s grace that you may be not almost, but altogether a Christian.”
Don’t you just hear the words of Paul echoed in this letter? Time and time again, the Scriptures exhort us to run a race. 1 Corinthians reads, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.” The book of Hebrews motivates us to “run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Don’t let unnecessary distractions weigh you down today—run with endurance and whole hearted fervor toward the prize!
